چکیده

Snake robots, sometimes called hyper-redundant mechanisms, can use their many degrees of freedom to achieve a variety of locomotive capabilities. These capabilities are ideally suited for disaster response because the snake robot can thread through tightly packed volumes, accessing locations that people and conventional machinery otherwise cannot. Snake robots also have the advantage of possessing a variety of locomotion capabilities that conventional robots do not. Just like their biological counterparts, snake robots achieve these locomotion capabilities using cyclic motions called gaits. These cyclic motions directly control the snake robot’s internal degrees of freedom which, in turn, causes a net motion, say forward, lateral and rotational, for the snake robot. The gaits described in this paper fall into two categories: parameterized and scripted. The parameterized gaits, as their name suggests, can be described by a relative simple parameterized function, whereas the scripted cannot. This paper describes the functions we prescribed for gait generation and our experiences in making these robots operate in real experiments. © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden and The Robotics Society of Japan, 2009

Bio-inspired locomotion for a modular snake robot [7321-14]

Inspired by the snake locomotion, modular snake robots have different locomotion capabilities by coordinating their internal degrees of freedom. They have the potential to access restricted spaces where humans cannot go. They can also traverse rough terrains while conventional wheeled and legged robots cannot. Modular robots have other features including versatility, robustness, low-cost, and f...

An Amphibious Snake-like Robot with Novel Gaits on Ground and in Water

Amphibious snake-like robots are advantageous than traditional snake-like robots for their adaptability in aquatic environments. This paper presents a novel amphibious snake-like robot. The mechanism and control system of the robot are illustrated. A simplified Serpenoid Curve is used to generate the basic undulation of the robot. Three-dimensional gaits are generated by combining undulations o...

Biomimetic Climbing Gaits for a Snake Robot

Mobile robotics have long been considered a possible tool for everything from remote diagnostics to search and rescue. Snake-like robots in particular have shown significant promise in search and rescue operations due to their ability to traverse a very wide range of sizes and shapes. Such robots can crawl in spaces not much larger than the robot itself, as well as climb over obstacles nearly a...

Implementing configuration dependent gaits in a self-reconfigurable robot

In this paper we examine locomotion in the context of self-reconfigurable robots. Self-reconfigurable robots are robots built from many connected modules. A selfreconfigurable robot can change its shape and configuration by changing the way these modules are connected. The focus of this paper is to understand how several locomotion gaits can be represented in such a robot and how the robot can ...
